I remember clearly the moment that my back pain began to ruin my life. It was the morning of U.S. Ski Team selections, the most important event of my skiing career. My mind was set for victory, to claim a spot on the US Ski Team and represent the United States in the Olympics.  

 

I visualized winning the competition. I could perfectly imagine the scene where my dreams came true and I competed in the Olympic games. My mind was set, I was pumped with adrenaline, and ready to win. I had been training for this pinnacle moment since I was 3 years old.

It was the most important day of my life and my body failed me.

 

I suffered a spinal injury during U.S. Ski Team Selections that was so intense I would never compete again.

 

I don’t remember my fall, it happened so quickly. The emergency responders surrounded me, and my coach was looking down over me as I laid there on the ski hill half unconscious. The wind was knocked out of me, and I had fierce pain in my back. In that moment, I knew my life had changed forever.

 

At first, I was thinking about how my dreams of making the Olympics were stolen from me in an instant. The goal I had been intensely training for every single day was stolen from me faster than I can say the word “Olympics.”

 

You see, I had left my friends and family and moved hours away at a young age to train at the best skiing facility. My family believed in me, it was their dream to watch me achieve my goals. When I hurt my back, I was in pain, but I also felt depressed and lonely, like I had let everyone down that was close to me.  

 

What happened next in this avalanche of pain and suffering was even worse. As I laid in the recovery room bed, tears rolling down my face. The doctors told me that not only would I never ski again, but that the first round of injections weren’t enough.

 

They had to double the dosage and do another round of shots.

After my injury I sought advice from top spinal specialists around the country. The doctors recommended I get invasive injections in my spine under anesthesia on a weekly basis. This was the recommended “cure” to my back pain.

 

After the first round of injections failed, and they recommended another round, I was so frustrated. My body became my enemy and I gave up physically and mentally.  

 

At 17 years old I underwent another round of injections with the dosage so high it was meant for a grown man, not a young girl. And it still didn’t work. By the end of the second round of injections, I felt worse, more debilitated than I was from the original ski injury that I suffered.

 

I could barely walk. Every time I bent forward the pain was so intense it took my breath away. I had visual bruising that lasted on my spine for two years after the injections. Then the depression set in, and I started to lose hope for my life. What would I do now? How would I go on? Why did this happen to me?

The skiing injury was my wake up call that something bigger was going on. If I didn’t correct the breach buried deep in my body, the pain could overtake me again at any given moment!  

 

I couldn’t help but acknowledge that I wasn’t feeling right about getting injections in my spine. The thought of injecting foreign substances into my body still makes me cringe. On my healing journey I went to medical doctors, physical therapists, massage therapists, and even tried yoga. The injections, the treatment that was supposed to heal me, cost about $15,000! I spent a small fortune and years of my life trying to overcome back pain, just to get an expensive bandaid.

Years have passed and I can still remember the piercing pain in my back that happened the day of my injury. I will never forget the look on my coach’s face as he looked down over me. I was lying lifeless on the ski run, he was out of breath from running up the hill to where I had fallen. At my side the whole time, my coach was calling my name to wake me up.

 

The emergency responders arrived. They surrounded me to do their emergency checks, and help me get down to the bottom of the competition run. I was dizzy, the wind was knocked out of me, and the sharp, piercing pain in my back would buckle me to my knees even with small movements.

 

Once I got to the bottom of the ski run I cried in my coach’s arms. He was so comforting in the moment, but looking back, despite his positivity, I think he knew it would be a long road to recovery.  

 

I did months of injections, massages, and rehabilitation. I was mortified by my inability to progress quicker with rehabilitation. Just as I would make some progress, I’d go in for another round of shots, and I felt like it would put me back by months.

 

I used to ski double black diamonds, hit huge ski jumps, lift heavy weights in the gym, and train with Olympians. After my injury I was barely able to walk around the block without pain. I felt like a failure and to make it even worse, I lost my athletically toned body that I had worked so hard for.

 

I’ll never forget when I was training with Miko, the Olympic Silver Medallist from Finland. He sat me down and told me I was a champion. He told me the only way I wouldn’t make it, was if I quit. Miko’s words stuck with me. Rehabilitation wasn’t going as planned, the shots didn’t work, and I was in crippling pain. I was forced to do the one thing Miko told me not to do, QUIT my skiing career.

Though I was blind to the solution in the moment, I now know precisely why I wasn’t healing faster. It took me a decade of studying to find the solution. I remember sitting in my doctorate courses learning about the spine and the human body. I used to pretend I didn’t have pain to my classmates because I was ashamed. I was ashamed that if I couldn’t heal myself, I’d never be able to help others.

 

So I lived a lie. I felt like an imposter. I was studying to become a spinal specialist and my own spine was in agonizing pain everyday! I was in pain for years sitting in class, but never mentioned it to my teachers or classmates for fear that they would judge me.  

While others would tune out on the weekends, or take breaks from school. I filled my weekends with more seminars and trainings. I studied over and beyond my doctorate requirements, I had to. I had to find a solution!

 

Through advanced research I realized that everything I was doing in rehabilitation was just to cover the pain. It was the bandaid effect. I was sick of treatments that didn’t correct the cause of the pain.

 

I started doing a lot of things right, but unknowingly by not correcting the cause, I was making things worse year after year. I was totally unaware of the buried breach in my body that could crack and leave me crippled in any moment. Like a structural imbalance in the foundation of a building, I was teetering on the edge of collapse.

I graduated with two doctorate degrees, but didn’t stop my education there. I continued to study post-doctorate neurology, human physiology, and posture certifications. If you cover the symptoms, but don’t correct the postural stress, one thing is for sure, you can count on it that your pain will continue to come back and hurt you.

     

    And it’s not just Advil, there are tons of gadgets out there that claim to be the perfect “cure” for your problem. Why waste your money on gadgets and foreign substances, just to mask the pain for a few hours. Mistake number 1 is common, you may be doing it already, but I hope you see with clarity now that masking the pain will NEVER fix the real problem.

  • Focusing On Only Stretching The Muscles

    The second mistake I see patients making all the time is that they just focus on stretching their muscles, and they completely neglect the alignment of their spine. You can’t stretch your way out of a structural problem!  No matter how many times you stretch your muscles, if the chronic postural distortion patterns are left uncorrected, the pain will persist, getting worse and worse as you age.

     

    Think of a house. If the alignment is off on your home, you can’t expect to correct the foundation by patching a few holes. The patching may disguise the problem for awhile, but you know that the foundational alignment is imbalanced, eventually leading to a horrific disaster. The same is true with your body.  Stretching is helpful, but it’s not the only solution. And it’s definitely not the answer to correcting your alignment.

These beautiful men and women weren’t in pain, they were flawless. They had tight bellies, could move their hips freely, and had confident posture. Even the men and women of advanced age showed the same demeanor. I watched elderly men and women in their 80s pass by on foot walking with great posture too.

 

Out of the corner of my eye I noticed older gentlemen standing with their backs against the wall, their bodies as straight as an arrow against a beautiful 16th century building.

 

How could these men and women of advanced age be in better shape than me? I was 27, a former national athlete, and a doctor. What was I missing, how was it possible they could be pain free but I wasn’t.

 

I was engulfed in the scene of Italians wisping by with beautiful posture and the grandiose Italian architecture. The men and women around me all had straight spines. Just like the walls and pillars to the buildings that were hundreds of years old.
